Monarch Butterflies in Mexico
Why do Monarchs Migrate to Mexico?
The mountain hillsides in Michoacán and Estado de Mexico provide an ideal microclimate for the butterflies. Here temperatures range from 0 to 15°C (32 to 59°F). The migrating Monarch butterflies travel in colonies of about 20 million insects and will travel between 150 – 222 km (80-120 nautical miles) per day, depending on the wind and other weather conditions. This incredible journey is completed over four generations. The first three generations live for only one or two months, but the fourth generation, known as Methuselah for its impressive longevity, lives for a remarkable eight months.
A beautiful scene I captured while checking out the butterflies.
